I just tried it, and the problem is definitely because of the frame
size.  Do you have the .IFO that's on the DVD?  If you play it with
the .IFO of a 720x576 movie, subtitles will be fine (apart from the
colors of course).

Does that mean that DVDs with 352x288 still have subtitles sized for
720x576?  Do you have other 352 pixels wide DVDs?
