you must do the decision.
windows->nvidia
linux->ati/matrox/3dfx

what about ati radeon? cheap, fast 3d and good linux support.
it has even hardware DCT/MV support for mpegs, it isn't yet supported
under linux but you can expect it soon with XvMC.

nvidia is not a choice for linux...
