How come software scale doesn't work everywhere? Shouldn't it convert
a, say, 320x240 stream into 960x720 before the imaging hardware ever
sees it? (It obviously doesn't work that way, but I'm just being
curious.)

Neither of these work. Here is the output:

    MPlayer CVS-010829-06:00(C) 2000-2001 Arpad Gereoffy (see DOCS/AUTHORS)

    Reading /home/hniksic/.mplayer/codecs.conf: 16 audio & 36 video codecs
    font: can't open file: /home/hniksic/.mplayer/font/font.desc
    font: can't open file: /usr/local/share/mplayer/font/font.desc
    Playing ../dl/ST-DS9-(YG-DV8)-S5-E116-Business-as-usual.wmv
Invalid video output driver name: sdl
Use '-vo help' to get a list of available video drivers.

    Exiting... (Fatal error)

I have the xv module in my X server, but it doesn't seem to work.
Specifically, `xvinfo' reports:

X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
 no adaptors present
