[Mplayer-dvb] DVB output... doesn't!

Hello list,
Sorry to bother you with what is probably a stupid mistake on my part.
But I haven't been able to work this out, and a search through the list
archives hasn't turned anything up.
I want to use mplayer to rip DVDs to disk, and replay them over my DVB
card (via VDR).
The ripping went fine with "mencoder -dvd 1 -o 001.vob -ovc copy -oac
copy", and the resulting file can be played with mplayer of x11 (no
sound tested).
But when I try to play the file over the DVB card, the DVB card
continues to show the tuned station.
I had installed the mplayer RPM, and thought that maybe DVB support
wasn't compiled in, but I've just compiled from the source (DVB was
autodetected), and it still doesn't work. :(
I've got the DVB driver loaded, VDR is not running, and I'm calling
mplayer like this:
# mplayer -v -ao mpegpes -vo mpegpes /vob.00/The_13th_Warrior/001.vob
