An unbreakable space before a colon, and a space after the colon.
Rrrgh! I really screwed up my explanation here...
Here is an example that (hopefully) will clarify all this:
in English:
(default: none)
in French:
(par défaut : aucun)
--> So in nroff, it would be:
(par défaut\ : aucun)
