I could dramatically speed up the fnt scan time in svn r37896, so that the
fnt/png size shouldn't matter any longer. For gnu-Unifont, for example, I'm
getting something like:

(old)
#   fnt scan time: 0.84193
#   png load time: 0.37870
#  fnt read total: 1.22065

(new)
#   fnt scan time: 0.01979
#   png load time: 0.37921
#  fnt read total: 0.39902
