It's to enable developing (i.e. testing) of the Win32 GUI part under Linux.
In this way everything that has already been installed for the Linux MPlayer
can be (re)used for the Wine MPlayer as well. You get two for the cost of one
and don't have to install or compile any special stuff for the Win32 part
(assuming you're already using Wine, of course).
And ... it was/is an interesting technical challenge.
