Although, your other patch, which covers part of the code I do not know
enough, changes demuxer_get_current_time to return a floating-point PTS: if
it is applied, a more elegant solution can be devised.

The way I understand it is: we do not have anything interesting to display,
so we fall back to displaying just the time in the movie. The comment is
very laconic, but it seems true.
