I created a temporary branch "tmp_sub" for the patch; the individual
commits there now are not meant to be merged as such, but hopefully the
resulting code will be later. I added quite a few simplifications (the
code is now about 90 lines shorter) and some fixes. I haven't done any
testing yet so it's possible that something broke. If you have further
changes please send them against the state of that branch.
