Weren't there plans to refactor X11-based libvos?

What about making HW-accelerated outputs a subclass of the parent X11? 
Some implementations can output to OpenGL too.

Concerning profile selection, what about giving away that information 
through control or a query_format() extension? For the latter, we already 
pass in an array. Why not make it 0-terminated with possibly additional 
HWCAPs in there? This remains compatible with other vos since they only 
use the first element, isn't it?
