That's so not true.
Leader has to lead i.e. giving directions or directives, that's all.
Code reviewing is not a relevant task for such a job.
It's ok for maintainers or technical approvers though.

 From what I rememeber, the XBMC project is currently leaded by someone
that pretends himself as not a coder at all and it's working very well 
this way. As long as a leader understands the project needs, is able to 
draw a planning, provides objectives and solutions and maintain to keep
his team motivated, coherent and organized, then he's a good leader.

Leading is all about social organization and your software's promotion.
Today, MPlayer suffers from a very bad:
  - organization
  - reputation
  - coherence

Leader's goal is to change that, not to code.
