 - being up-to-date regarding dependencies (think about X.org transition...)
 - don't depend on some perl helper which is not in debian anymore
 - tested to build on all debian supported arch
 - actively maintained
 - translated (package description and templates IIRC)
 - ...

The official package is certainly not perfect and probably not acceptable
as is for our repository. But still it's IMO in a much better shape than
ours. So I would much prefer seeing some improvements on official package
to get it acceptable instead of duplicating maintenance work.
