This is actually for me a downside of alsa. I do not want
to have any automagic stuff working behind my back wich
does not tell me at all that it's doing something.

For the common case raised a few times in the discussion
that a soundcard doesnt support a certain sampling rate
and thus needs resampling is for me _the_ point why it
shouldn't be done by alsa. Imagine that MPlayer resamples
the sound for some reason (either because the user wanted
it or because alsa told it that it doesn't support the
sampling rate of the source file), then we would end up
with two resampling operations, and hence with a lot of
quality los.
