if you have 2 different implementations where each has some advantages 
it makes sense to "keep"/maintain both, if OTOH one can do everything
the other can it does not make sense
this doesnt yet apply to lavf/mpdemux but when it does one should be
droped in favor of the other
if you can make mpdemux better (and useable outside mplayer and LGPL)
i wouldnt hesitate to drop lavf in ffmpeg in favor of it
though the other way around is quite a bit more likely ...
