And the grand utopian holy grail, on top of the above:
make MPlayer ignore external codecs.conf and retry
with internal only, if playing the file fails due to codec
failure, or due to demuxer failure where there's more than
one demuxer available depending on codec implementation
used (theora, mpc?)..

Utopian, perhaps...
