It has included lots of workarounds for gcc-2.95, and those have had a
real negative effect. By what definition is gcc-2.95 "less broken" than
the screensavers?

If you have a reason why adding screensaver-specific code would be more
trouble than it's worth then say so. But the above kind of "it's the
fault of the user's system if the existing code doesn't work" argument
is not valid when the build system tries to support lots of different
limited/broken systems.
