Hmm, which version of Xorg do you have?
I've tested it and it works with newest Ubuntu Xorg and DPMS.

It seems to be some user config option - which command to execute to
disable screen saver instead inner mplayer code. If configured mplayer
will just use it (stop-screensaver-cmd=command_to_execute).

Event generator is not that bad solution but you have to use additional
X-server extensions to generate fake key events for example.
