Well, actually I don't care about user/codec/whateverspecific. My point
was more that making people install codecs.conf is just a really bad
idea.
Alternatives (which all suck):
1) commandline option (but we already have so many...)
2) runtime patching (if PECompact is what I think this would be
extremely ugly, and some might have moral objections).

Huh? The very early incomplete versions did not have such a check IIRC. I
don't know if they are of much use, they AFAIK support neither CABAC not
interlaced, but still.
