At this point we at least could agree, Rich.

The autoconf semantics (aka commad line syntax, etc) aren't so 
bad, IMHO. The problem of autoconf ist "just" that it simply doesn't
work the way it claims to.

In fact there are some things to do, which could make things easier,
ie. for crosscompiling. For example the machine detection stuff:
there should at least be a way for overriding *all* the autodection,
so we don't get code for the wrong machine.
