I've had my eye on this thread. Unfortunately, I don't have a firm grasp
of the A-V sync code; so far all I've done is modify what goes into it,
and trust it does the right thing. :)

The patch you posted and the rationale behind it sound reasonable to me,
though, and I am interested in seeing some of your test material.
