Well I think ditching the old subtitle layer is an idea bad as hell. Try 
running a 160x120 video with subtitles with "-ass" and then again 
without that, without any softscaling, without vidmode change and with 
"-vo gl".

I've always thought it's pretty evil to draw subtitles directly into the 
picture, but vo_gl solved this problem for me. Since it doesn't work on 
my notebook, I've thought about drawing subtitles with xosd, or 
something similar, but forcing into-picture rendering for all cleartext 
subtitles (althought you're gonna do it for matroska only) is really 
really evil idea I'm going to hate you for.

And please don't tell me every video nowadays has enough resolution to 
have readable subtitles drawn in it.
