Rendering subtitles into picture is bad, but it is important for mencoder. The 
day will come when vo support for libass-generated images will be added. 
Until than, both ways should coexist.

The current behaviour is to render as much as possible with libass, and 
fallback to old engine when -ass is given on the command line; and to render 
everything with the old engine when -ass is omitted.
