Counterproposals:

use the linux kernel way or

${feature_version}.${time}

feature_version=1.0.0 (as in major,minor,micro)
time=20050930 (isodate)

That way a snapshot could use the isodate and odd minor and a full
release could use an even minor.

Most depends on what we want to do.

the second way is quite useful since we have daily snapshots,
neverending pre releases ( that could be 0.9.999999 ) and some full
releases (1.0.1 , the 1.0.0 obviously will crash and die and will be
replaced in 10min after the release =P...)
