Hmm, good point.

I would have thought so to, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
Try out the test Kevin DeKorte posted in the -users thread.  MPlayer
(with -nocache) seems to need nearly 1MB downloaded before you start
playing, otherwise it hits the EOF early.

Well, the "real problem" is limited to demux_audio.c, as lavf works
just fine with a small, incomplete, growing MP3.
