If I was you I would post it as news.
We already have precendent with mail of the year, where some user
thought we are developing  windows media player.

The post should have minimum length without entering into details. Like: 
"The development of MPlayer have been temporarily stopped, because all
developers are  ROTFLMAO-ing after reading the following. The
development will continue as soon as possible. Probably after a week
:))))))
