I think it was proposed to remove those filters, but nobody ever did it.
I have collected a list of deprecated things slated for removal once.  I
could dig it out.  It's time to overcome inertia and clean up the
codebase a bit, it should be done before 1.0.

I have a mailbox full of unapplied patches, but I think none are this
old.  Running through that list of patches and applying or rejecting
them is a project in itself, but it should be worth it.

I agree that fixing binary decoders is of limited usefulness.  You could
open entries in Bugzilla for them.  Maybe somebody will fix them
someday, who knows...
