I already answered this question elsewhere, but on the subject of bloat, 
maybe we should add an option to ./configure so one or both of these 
drivers can be disabled and not compiled in. --disable-pnm or something, 
analog to the current enable/disable options. Not that it are huge drivers 
btw. md5sum is ~7kB and pnm is ~13kB, but on embedded systems for example, 
every kilobyte might count.
