I will try and summarize

was an issue with compiling patches for upgrading the libfaad2 library
in mplayer on his win2k box under cygwin.

I installed cygwin and some packages to tets the build on windows XP
and this worked for both me and diego.

my build was a straight configure with no alternate options enabled.
no external libs are required AFAIK
(libfaad2 is internal to mplayer in this case)

I do copy the libavcodec and libavformat dirs from ffmpeg CVS into the mplayer
CVS source tree before configuring and building

you will want at least one audio output choice enabled.

two types to compile

There is a patch to current CVS version by Dr Richard Felker
see
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.mplayer.devel/17459

or my sync to the audiocoding.com CVS patch

http://adland123.tripod.com/libfaad2_sync.tgz

with this patch playback of SBR files failed

I have a new fix to apply on top of this CVS patch to enable playback of SBR
(also called he aac or aac plus) mp4 audio files.
nero has an encoder for these files in windows I think.
http://adland123.tripod.org/libfaad2_cvs_sbr_fix

submitted this fix to the devels for libfaad2

please just ask if you need more info

Thanks
