I would say it was for lack of any alternative...

MythTV uses RTjpeg compression, so it produces very large files.  Tens
of gigabytes in some cases, and it needs to be able to playback while
still recording.  Just what file format would you recomend? Remember
that matroska didn't exist at the time.
