Yes.  And that's why I updated the documentation accordingly:

If you install by hand it's your duty to clean up by hand.  The
solution is to build a proper MPlayer installer and not install a
several MB closed source application that hooks deeply into your
system and runs hidden processes!

OK, now I see where you are coming from!  This information is indeed
outdated.

Alex, could you please remove the HOWTO section from the codecs page
and delete both QT-HOWTOs?  They are no longer necessary and wrong.
