Unless the fglrx sets some registers differently in a predicatable way I don't 
see how else this could be done.

Would it be acceptable to wrap the X specific code in #ifdef HAVE_X11 ... 
#endif so that the driver only depended on X if it were installed? Not the 
greatest solution I know but otherwise I'd imagine xvidix isn't going to work 
for a fair few people.
