what about RTFM?
it DOES already exists since ages, just called afair -demuxer
the mp3 case is in the FAQ too afair

once i'll implement combined mpeg audio-video demuxer, then it'll be
possible to reliably detect mp3 and mpeg-ps.
at least i hope :)
