What about adding an -if (input format) option so that you could write
"-if audio" to force audio file? That way you wouldn't have to worry
about the problems in demux_open_stream (demuxer.c). If this is possible,
would a clean patch for it be accepted?

(I use mplayer to decode audio files into PCM for audio-CD burning. AFAIK
there's no other way to decode WMA files in linux. It would be nice
if you could use mplayer to decode mp3 files as well.)
