libmpdemux/stheader.h

  // out buffers:
  char* a_buffer;
  int a_buffer_len;
  int a_buffer_size;
  int sample_format;

the 'type' of a_buffer is actually depends on teh value of sample_format.
in most cases it's char or short, signed or unsigned.
see libao2/afmt.h for possible types
