Good work. I have some recomendations.

You may mention that the GUI is in alpha
development stage.

Installing ffmpeg ought to be STEP1, it is
much more importan to watch the movie than
to read it!!. STEP4 must be second.

For installing fonts it may be a good idea
to show how the directory should look after
successfully instalation e.g.
"enter ls ~/.mplayer/font and if you see
bla, bla bla
then you have installed the fonts". This is
a common mistake and for win32 codecs instalation.

Again for ffmpeg. The sentance "if you are using
release..." should be on the top. No need to
read the rest, if you have it.

Why the users should move the libavcodec directory?
This is CVS and next time it will download only the
differences. So i think that copy is better choice.
It wont be bad to give the command to the users e.g.
enter "cp -R /dir/to/ffmpeg/libavcodec/ /dir/to/mplayer/"
This is the place to ask Arpi to change the cvs module name from "main" to "mplayer".

About Installing Win32 codecs. There are ASF files that could be played without win32 binaries
and there are enough DivX3 avi-s that came with WMA audio (divx-audio).

And the senstance "the buildin codecs are much faster..." i missunderstood as "win32 are much
faster..". We are talking about win32 and must say that they are slower that the native one.
Anyway this is not in big importance.

STEP4 is dublicated:) (win32,compiling:)

Best Regards
  Ivan Kalvachev
