I was referring to DivX 4 & 5, not MPEG-4. DivX is an implementation, not
a format. As for MPEG-4 generally, VP3 is a fundamentally stronger
algorithm. Alot of what you see however is in the implementation details,
and VP3 is just getting started (for instance we don't even support 2-pass
encoding yet). It can only get better.

And as for the 'bogus MPEG-4 patents', you should check this out more
thoroughly. See: http://www.mpegla.com/mpeg4/m4patentlist.html for a
partial list of what you're up against. If you want anyone with any
commercial interests to get behind your applications, you need to address
this issue. Also see http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/020131/310215_1.html
check out especially the 2-cents-per-hour usage fee. With Sony and
Microsoft behind them, (and http://www.mpegla.com/mpeg4/m4licensors.html),
there will be plenty of suits around to wreak havoc.

We contend that VP3 is patent-free -- we have contributed all our
patent licenses gratis as part of the LGPL requirement. That's a *BIG*
plus over MPEG-4.
