I meant that if vobsub output was not integrated into mencoder and you
are also reencoding the DVD/VOB your are getting the subs from then
you'll need up to three more passes (worst case, when there are more
than 3 subtitle streams) for their extraction.

For this we would need a demuxer layer that is able to handle multiple
streams of the same type...  From what I saw (I'd love to be
corrected) the current demuxer layer can read at most one video, one
audio stream and one subtitle stream.

Yes, I quickly felt ill at ease whenever I wanted to do something
fancy in mencoder...  I think the vop layer helped a bit though.
