I misspoke.  My old board had the es1371.  My new board has one that is
driven by the cmpci driver.  

Regardless of that, I did finally solve the problem.  I updated my kernel
to 2.4.20-pre1, and updated my bttv driver to 0.8 (I had been on 0.7).  I
don't know which update got it, but it's working now.  Working
marvelously, I might add -- from video straight to DivX at under 10% CPU
utilization.  :-)
