Is SDL listed as an enabled vo at the end of configure's output?
If it is, then it should be added to the list of vo sources to
compile into libvo/libvo.a and that should be enough.
If it's not, then check configure.log for errors detecting SDL.
You may be missing a crucial lib or header.

I know that may be obvious advice, but it's all I can think
of at the moment, unless your problem gets more specific.
