I tried playing a .ogm file subs without -ass and saw no problems.

Putting that huge dump in the middle of the mail was a bad idea IMO, I
almost skipped all of the rest without noticing you had more comments
below.

r23346 looks specific to -ass and not likely to affect non-ass subs. I
think r23356 is a more likely candidate.
