One last question on this.  I see you are using mencoder 1.1-4.8  Is this a 
Linux version revision number?  My MEncoder is svn-37905.  How old is your 
version?

That is a big drop from, let's say, a 5 GB DVD.  What resolution are you 
using and -xvidencopts are you using?  Quality could be bad.
