I was under the impression that the archive was packed in May 2013.
3 months did not seem "very old" to me.
I noticed that the changelog has not been updated since 1.1 in June 2012, though - so how old is 1.1.1 really?

I thought that's what I did?

I must have been mislead by http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html which states:
"We recommend to use latest SVN always, but currently there is also a reasonably recent release available, which includes an FFmpeg snapshot.
MPlayer 1.1.1 release"
Anyways, I downloaded the current svn snapshot this morning (labeled mplayer-export-2013-08-22).
With current ffmpeg it compiles.
With ffmpeg 1.2 (as suggested by Jan) it does _not_.
The resultig mencoder binary:
With -oac faac -faacopts quality=64:tns=1:object=2 it produces an invalid video file and issues the bogus error message.
With -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=libfaac:aglobal=64 everything is fine.
Regards
Oliver
