[MEncoder-users] mpeg4 asp .. no takers?

A lot of 'asp' documentation I've read from various sources has a good deal
to say about motion compensation. A lot of mencoder/libavcodec
documentation covers motion estimation. In the libavcodec realm, Is
compensation tied into estimation in such that when you address estimation
with the various tunables, are you somewhere 'under the hood' making
compensation decisions as well?

Even though I'm not a programmer, I've tried to read the source to answer
some of my questions, but looking directly at the code isn't taking me
where I need to go. Perhaps I just need pointers to specific header/source
files? I'm sure if I could gain a better understanding of how compensation
works in libavcodec, I would be better able to wield the codec.

In short, would someone being willing to provide a brief description of how
the two tie together?
