[MEncoder-users] Sound stream is present but silent

I have compiled mplayer/mencoder from svn trunk with the default 
configure options.

When I try to re-encode videos with basic lavc, I get normal video with 
a sound stream, but the sound stream remains silent. This occurs on any 
video regardless of the format / codec used in the input video.

This problem occurs both on cygwin and ubuntu.

Would anyone know what might be the problem?
