Yes. The movie was partially shot for IMAX. Those portions appear at the 
larger aspect ratio. If you purchase the bluray or DVD, it actually 
announces this fact at the start of the movie. Batman the Dark Knight 
has a similar treatement. The lesson here is to know the material you 
are working with, and not blindly apply a tool to it.
