MEncoder has YADIF, FFmpeg doesn't (yet).
MEncoder can change speed of movie with '-speed n', FFmpeg doesn't.
MEncoder can scale an interlaced movie (third parameter to 'scale' filter), 
FFmpeg can't.

For me, MEncoder is far from dead.
