Thanks for the link.  But

 Nearly all of this guide's comments assume you are using two pass.

If I use 

  mencoder /dev/video0 ...

or 

  cat /dev/video0 | mencoder - ...

can I get "two pass"? My understanding of "two pass" is that two passes
are made over a file.
