Thanks. I tried the above, and it made the iconv messages go away. However,
I still can't open the file:
-bash-3.00$ ./mencoder in.avi -o out.avi
MEncoder dev-SVN-r27339-3.4.5 (C) 2000-2008 MPlayer Team
success: format: 0 data: 0x0 - 0x129000
AVI file format detected.
AVI_NI: No video stream found.
============ Sorry, this file format is not recognized/supported

Cannot open demuxer.
Exiting...
When I try mplayer:
-bash-3.00$ ./mplayer in.avi
MPlayer dev-SVN-r27339-3.4.5 (C) 2000-2008 MPlayer Team
Playing in.avi.
AVI file format detected.
AVI_NI: No video stream found.
Exiting... (End of file)
I haven't been able to compile ffmpeg separately so I don't know what it
would say. I did download the windows compiled distribution of mplayer, and
mencoder handled the avi just fine, and mplayer opened it and displayed it
also.
I don't know if it's relevant but I couldn't compile mplayer initially until
I set --disable-ass in the configuration.
Any further advice?
