Then this is wrong and I was confused by Mencoder man, which states that

man: "tfields=0: Leave fields unchanged (will jump/flicker)".

As one field is half the vertical resolution of a frame, I was
expecting that tfields=0 would result in passing to the next filter
two fields of half the input vertical resolution.

man: "tinterlace (...) merge pairs of frames into an interlaced frame,
halving the framerate (...) This can be used to fully reverse the
effect of the  tfields  filter  (in mode 0)"

>From the man, one would guess that tfields=0,tinterlace would be a
null operation, not something doubling the height.
