Though you have to be very lucky for one to "just work".  It's quite a
bit of work.

Everything mplayer can handle is in codecs.conf.  

MPlayer can accept VFW, DMO, QTVideo, Linux .so (and probably other)
binary codecs.

It's rare to find a codec which can't do both.  It's right there in the
name.  But codecs.conf is not used for encoding purposes.
